Friends and family,
Here is the latest update on my dad:
Through pulmonary function tests (PFT) run today which he'd been doing at the Mayo Clinic for almost the past 16 months, his efficiency scores were obviously higher than his first readings 16 months ago. This was without the side effects of coughing, sweating, seeing stars and having low oxygen rates as he exerted to try to produce as much oxygen on his own as he could. Today's tests, which he repeated a few times, was without all the side effects of the diseased lungs he previously had in his body just a mere (almost) 2 weeks ago. After the PFT tests, he was administered the bronchoscopy by the head of the lung transplant department. The doctor then reviewed his scores with him prior to that test and how thrilled he was with the results from today. The doctor's statement was that you usually peak out with max efficiencies within 6 months of transplant date making that 6 month period a very critical time to stay healthy and build your new lungs up as best you can. As the doctor was explaining these things to him today, he had tears of joy in his eyes and gratefulness to our God for the miracle He has performed.
They have already given him his hospital visitation schedule through the end of November and at this point, he has only one week day where he doesn't have to grace them with his presence. Although he has a tough road ahead, my dad is determined to see this all through and do exactly as he is told.
As they were sitting in the vestibule area awaiting test results, one of the doctors passed by and turned and said "I almost didn't recognize you Rick. It's good to see you. You're looking great". To which my dad responded, "It's all God" and the doctor nodded in agreement.
The current prayer request would be for the lung donor's family. The lung transplant coordinator at the Mayo Clinic asked if my dad would be comfortable in writing them a brief letter. Pray that God will give my dad the right words to say, that it will continue to glorify God and that it will minister to them. Pray for the acceptance of this letter in the manner and in the heart of which it will be written and please continue to pray for that family for their loss.
The other prayer request is for continued progress for my dad, to help any setbacks and also strength for Debbie. My dad says at times it seems he has the easier job between him and Debbie. She is truly a Proverbs 31 wife. Thank you for your continued prayers, pages, expressions of love and outpouring support given to our family.
